Enfield finished their Middlesex League campaign with a worthy 13-12 (4-4, 4-4, 3-1, 2-3) win over Ealing at Southgate on Wednesday.
Rob Lucas ensured the hosts got off to a strong start with two goals from distance, but an experienced Ealing quickly responded with four fine finishes.
Andy Rollé and Costas Chamalidis then found space to level the game 4-4 at the end of the first.
The second quarter was another close encounter, with Ealing firing in four goals from the top of the arc.
Thankfully, Charlie Briers was on form in 2m and slammed in two powerful strikes, while Lucas added a second and captain Rob Threadgold tied the scores 8-8 at the end of the half.
A red flag dismissal in the third led to the visitors being down to a bare seven and the hosts’ numerical advantage soon began to show.
Ealing gradually tired and Enfield were able to edge 11-9 in front through breakaway goals from Rollé, Threadgold and Andy Poore.
In the fourth, Enfield missed a number of chances to storm ahead and this inspired Ealing’s attack back into action.
Three cracking shots from outside 6m put the west Londoners 12-11 ahead on the night and it looked as if they were going to steal the points.
However, Lucas pulled Enfield level and it was then that the stage was set for young Briers to fire home the winning goal from 2m with just over a minute remaining.
Enfield’s team in full was Andy Boorman, Costas Chamalidis, Nikos Chamalidis, Charlie Briers, Alex Waller, Richard Waller, Craig Snowdon, Andy Rollé, Rob Lucas, Rob Threadgold, Adrian Lo & Andy Poore.
