Enfield scored a controversial last-minute winner to edge Ealing 7-6 (1-1, 3-0, 1-4, 2-1) in a thrilling Middlesex League encounter away at Gurnell on Thursday.
With the scores locked at 6-6, Ealing looked to have sealed the points late on with a shot that seemed to flash past Enfield keeper Andy Boorman, but the referee ruled no goal and waved play on.
It was potentially the second goal of the night not given as earlier in the final quarter Enfield’s Richard Waller appeared to find the far corner, but again the referee waved play on.
With the low lighting and only one official, the conditions were difficult, but Alex Waller played to the whistle and found space on the far post to fire home the winner with only seconds remaining.
Ultimately, Enfield were fortunate to make it six wins from their last six games in all competitions as they had travelled lightly to Ealing with only nine players.
Alex Waller was the star performer and top scored with five, while Richard Waller got one and Frazer Briers slammed home the goal of the game with a superb steal and solo breakaway finish.
Enfield are in Middlesex Water Polo League action again next Thursday away at Otter, 8.15pm start at St Paul’s Girls School in Hammersmith.
Enfield’s team in full and scorers: Andy Boorman, Craig Snowdon, Martin Waller, Richard Waller (1), Alex Waller (5), Frazer Briers (1), Andy Rollé, Tony Matthews & Chris Waller
