FINA issues warnings to British swimmer Duncan Scott and China’s Sun Yang after podium controversy

 

On the medal podium today in Gwangju, South Korea, British swimmer Duncan Scott refused to shake China’s Sun Yang’s hand or pose for a group photo with him after the 200m freestyle final at the FINA World Aquatics Championships.

After the flashpoint during the medal ceremony, Sun Yang appeared to say to Scott, “You’re a loser, I am a winner.”

Following the controversial events, FINA issued the following statement:

 

FINA STATEMENT

“The FINA Executive met today in Gwangju (South Korea) to analyse the situation occurred during the men’s 200m free victory ceremony at the FINA World Championships and has decided to send a warning letter to athletes Duncan Scott (Great Britain) and Sun Yang (China).

Both competitors had an inadequate behaviour on this occasion, which is not acceptable in accordance with the FINA Constitution Rule C 12.1.3.”
