Ortigia upsets Vouliagmeni, OSC, Marseille, Jadran march on
Euro Cup sides hit back, three of the four teams entering this competition reached the semis, only Jadran (MNE) survived the quarter-finals among the clubs coming from the Champions League qualifications.
Ortigia made it: the Italians managed to turn the clash with Vouliagmeni around despite losing at home in the first leg. It was crucial that at 3-5 they could kill four man-downs in a row, and later they went 4-7 up early in the fourth. The Greeks still had something to say and with 2:58 from time they came back 6-7. But the last two were netted by the Italians and that double sent them to the semi-finals.
The two in-house battles ended in big beatings: Jadran, already enjoying a two-goal advantage, destroyed fellow Montenegrin side Primorac by scoring 15 goals. In the French duel Marseille and Strasbourg stood even in aggregate early in the third but then the hosts could jump to an 8-4 lead and there was no way back for their rivals.
One of the strong favourites for the trophy, OSC (HUN) didn’t let Terrassa (EPS) into the game. The first leg ended in a 9-9 draw, this time the Hungarians blew the Spaniards away in two periods taking a commanding 8-3 lead. Terrassa tried to climb back but didn’t have a realistic chance even though the hosts scored only two goals in the second half.
The draw for the semi-finals will be conducted on 11 December (next Tuesday) in the LEN Office in Nyon.
